Aegina Seagrass Map

For the last few months, Vessel has been working on a map of the seagrass meadows which surround Aegina, as part of our 'Mapping Seagrass' project. This map is now on paper tablecloths, which we're giving to restaurants all over the island for the summer season.

Seagrasses are fundamental to ocean ecology, creating habitats, stabilising shorelines, producing vital oxygen, and drawing down carbon. But they're also under threat from human activity, damaged by ships' anchors and fish farms, and vulnerable to climate change.

We made this map to show how we're surrounded by this often invisible, yet amazing organism, to encourage people to learn more about it, and to share best practices for living alongside it. We also included Aegina's wonderful network of hiking paths, the watercourses of the island, and lots of points of natural interest, from springs to souvalas, the ancient olive grove, pistachio agriculture, and wildlife, to help locals and visitors alike to explore more of the island.
