Seagrass Packing Seminar

SEAGRASS PACKAGING SEMINAR

Participants: 2

Vessel used dried seagrass to pack over one hundred ceramic objects to send to the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2025. This technique was developed from accounts of Venetian merchants sending Murano glass objects packed in seagrass to protect them during transportation.

We wanted to share this knowledge and see if we could get it to be applied to small local businesses who make and sell their own ceramic objects. So we invited Stefani Orati who runs Stef & Irini to work on a method to develop sustainable packaging. Stefani has a strong personal link to Aegina and so she was excited to bring the island into her business.

We worked on a two box method, each one stuffed with seagrass to create a strong and stable environment for each ceramic piece. We even tested it by dropping the box! Stefani left Vessel with six bags of dried seagrass and was excited to begin using it in her business.

We are also working with local ceramicist Maria Sanchez to teach her the same method of packing to protect her objects.
